When is the best time to go on Safari?

Ultimately, the best time for a safari in Kenya aligns with your unique requirements and desires. Take into account your budget, interests, and weather preferences to make the most suitable choice for you. The ideal time for a safari in Kenya varies based on your preferences and priorities:

Wildlife Viewing
  • June to October – This period marks the dry season, characterized by clear, sunny weather, sparse vegetation, and animals gathering around water sources, enhancing visibility. It’s also the prime time for the Great Migration, a breathtaking event where millions of wildebeests and zebras cross the Mara River. However, prices are typically at their peak during this time.
  • January to February – Another dry season with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, fewer crowds, and slightly lower prices compared to the peak season.
  • March to May and November to December – These shoulder seasons offer good wildlife viewing chances at lower prices with fewer crowds. However, there is a risk of rain, and some parks may have restricted access due to muddy roads.
Budget
  • March to May and November to December – Shoulder seasons provide the best value for money.
  • June to October- The peak season is the most costly period for a safari.
Weather
  • June to October–  Hot and dry weather with clear skies.
  • January to February– Hot and dry, but slightly cooler than the peak season.
  • March to May and November to December–  Warm weather with a chance of rain.
Additional Considerations
  • Birdwatching – The prime time for birdwatching varies depending on the bird species of interest. Typically, the rainy season (March to May and November to December) is perfect for migratory birds, while the dry season is preferable for resident bird species.
  • Specific Parks– Different parks have distinct seasons for various activities. For instance, Amboseli National Park is optimal for elephant sightings during the dry season, whereas Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for flamingo watching during the rainy season.
